My Most Unexpected Business School Experience - Jared
/Prior to beginning my MBA experience, I expected to meet new people in a hyper social settings. As such, I was prepared for cultural exchange and travel. What I was not prepared to do was assume the responsibilities of a loosehead prop on a local NYC rugby team. Playing rugby was by far the experience I least expected to encounter prior to attending NYU's MBA program.
Not only had I never played rugby, I had never played an organized sport in my life; but at the convincing of a friend over a few conversations during Beer Blast (Stern's weekly social event), I found myself suiting up and learning a foreign game to help NYU field a full squad to compete against other Northeast MBA programs. For two seasons, we traveled weekends to places like New Haven or Philly to play other MBA club teams; other weekends we would play local club teams like Columbia Med School or teams sponsored by bars or local unions. These weekend games and tournaments were preparation for the annual MBA world rugby tournament held at Duke University. I had the chance to participate in the tournament during both years of my MBA experience. Competing with teams from MBA programs from all over the world was definitely a highlight and my most unexpected MBA experience.
Little did I know, my front row performance would have nothing to do with the Socratic Method. Similar to other MBA candidates, I embarked on my MBA mission with an open mind and was met with truly unique and inspiring challenges and experiences that made my MBA experience full of great times and good memories.
